Unity, formerly Over the Edge Entertainment, is the provider of a three dimensional game development platform and game development software. It owns and operates a real-time 3D development platform to create games and interactive 2D, 3D, VR, and AR experiences.

Unity enables the creation of online content that provides the newest games on the console market. It also provides Unity Asset Server, an integrated version control solution for all Unity assets and scripts.

Unity was founded in Denmark in 2004 as Over the Edge I/S, and became Unity Technologies ApS in 2006. The people behind the company are David Helgason, Joachim Ante, & Nicholas Francis. Unity is headquartered in San Francisco, California with additional offices in Canada, China, Colombia, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Korea, Japan, Lithuania, Singapore, Sweden, Ukraine, and the United Kingdom.

Unity Technologies caters to gaming, film, automotive and transportation, AEC, brand ads and experiences, gambling, educational technology, and XR sectors.

Unity is backed by Sequoia Capital, D1 Capital Partners, CPP Investment Board, Light Street Capital, Silver Lake Partners, WestSummit Capital, iGlobe Partners and others. The company  raised $525M in Secondary Market financing on Jul 25, 2019. This brings Unity's total funding to $1.3B to date. Unity was last valued at $6B after it had raised $150M Series E round in May 2019. 

 

Unity has raised more than $1.3B in an initial public offering (IPO) at a $13.6B valuation on Sep 18, 2020. The company has also acquired ProCore Tools, Multiplay, Mécanim, Playnomics, Tsugi, Engine Room Games, Applifier, & Vivox to date.
