ProtonMail

ProtonMail is an end-to-end encrypted email service, developed by CERN and MIT scientists. They are open source and protected by Swiss privacy law.

ProtonMail's secure email system is designed around the principle of zero access. This means user data cannot be read by ProtonMail and turned over to third parties because ProtonMail servers do not store user encryption keys.

ProtonMail was founded in 2014 at the CERN research facility by Andy Yen, Jason Stockman, and Wei Sun. The company has it's headquartered based in Genève, Geneva, Switzerland and its servers are located at two locations in Switzerland, outside of US and EU jurisdiction.

ProtonMail's mission is to defend the right to privacy by making end-to-end encrypted email easy enough for anyone to use. To support this mission, they offer free email accounts without ads or abusing its users data.

ProtonMail has evolved into a global effort to protect civil liberties and build a more secure Internet, with team members also hailing from Caltech, Harvard, ETH Zurich and many other research institutions.

ProtonMail is backed by European Commission, CRV, FONGIT, MassChallenge, & MIT Venture Mentoring Service (MIT VMS). The company raised €2M in it's latest Grant funding on Mar 8, 2019. This brings ProtonMail's total funding to $4.7M to-date.
