Palantir was founded in 2004 by Alex Karp, Peter Thiel, Joe Lonsdale, Stephen Cohen, & Nathan Gettings. The company is headquartered in Palo Alto, California, United States with 15 offices throughout the world.
Palantir developed its technology by computer scientists and analysts from intelligence agencies over three years, through pilots facilitated by In-Q-Tel. The company stated computers alone using artificial intelligence could not defeat an adaptive adversary. Instead, Palantir proposed using human analysts to explore data from many sources, called intelligence augmentation.
Palantir's original clients were federal agencies of the USIC. It has since expanded its customer base to serve state and local governments, as well as private companies in the financial, healthcare, Automotive, Cyber, GDPR, Insider Threat, Insurance Analytics, & Law Enforcement.
Palantir Gotham (formerly known as Palantir Government) integrates structured and unstructured data, provides search and discovery capabilities, knowledge management, and secure collaboration. The Palantir platform includes the privacy and civil liberties protections mandated by legal requirements such as those in the 9/11 Commission Implementation Act of 2004.
Palantir's investors include In-Q-Tel, Founders Fund, Tiger Global Management, Kortschak Investments, L.P., Kenneth Langone, & Stanley Druckenmiller among others. The company raised $500M in a new funding, ahead of its IPO on June 19, 2020. The latest round brings Palantir's total funding to $2.5B to date. Palantir was valued at a massive $20B in late 2015.
