Neuralink

Neuralink is an American neurotechnology company, developing ultra high bandwidth brain-machine interfaces to connect humans and computers.

Neuralink has been working on for the last two years. The company will explore how brain interfaces might alleviate the symptoms of dangerous and chronic medical conditions.

Neuralink was founded in 2016 by Elon Musk, Max Hodak, Ben Rapoport, Dongjin Seo, Paul Merolla, Philip Sabes, Tim Gardner, Tim Hanson, and Vanessa Tolosa. The company is headquartered in Fremont, California.

Neuralink develops an implant called the N1 that comes in at about the size of a coin. Remotely rechargeable, the implant goes along with electrode-laced threads that go further into the brain.

Neuralink has also engineered a surgical (R1) robot capable of rapidly inserting many flexible probes into the brain, which may avoid the problems of tissue damage and longevity issues associated with larger and more rigid probes.

Neuralink plans to eventually make brain chips with 16,000 electrodes. The first version of its chip will include 1,024 electrodes.

Neuralink is backed by Google Ventures, Elon Musk, Founders Fund, Valor Equity Partners, Craft Ventures, DFJ Growth, Vantage Legacy Capital, Vy Capital, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, and others. The company raised $280M in a Series D round on Aug 07, 2023. This brings Neuralink's total funding to $643M to date. The latest round reportedly valued Neuralink at a $5B post-money.
