Lightyear

Lightyear is a high-tech company developing the world’s first long-range solar car.

Lightyear's mission is to bring clean mobility to everyone, everywhere.

Lightyear was founded in 2016 by Arjo van der Ham, Koen van Ham, Lex Hoefsloot, Martijn Lammers, and Qurein Biewenga. The company is headquartered in Helmond, Netherlands.

Lightyear is scheduled to begin production of its Lightyear 0 (formerly called Lightyear One) car this coming fall, costing prospective buyers a cool €250,000. So far, the company has pre-sold 150 of these vehicles, and it has capacity to build nearly 1,000.

Lightyear is also working on the follow-up, the Lightyear 2, which is its full mass-market model that weighs in at a more affordable €30,000 — it’s expected to hit production in 2025 and will be available in the U.S., U.K. and Asia, among other markets.

Lightyear recently announced a development collaboration with Koenigsegg. The company’s technologies, known for its extremely powerful sports cars, will be incorporated into the mass-market Lightyear 2 model.

Lightyear is backed by Invest-NL, DELA, Zero Point Holding, SHV Holdings, Koenigsegg Automotibe, FAST — by GETTYLAB, and others. The company raised €81M ($81M) in a new round on Sep 06, 2022. This brings Lightyear's total funding to $183M to date.
