Komaza is a distributed forestry company that partners with smallholder farmers in Kenya to plant trees for sale as sustainable wood products.

Komaza was founded in 2006 by Tevis Howard. The company is headquartered in Kilifi Town, Kilifi, with an office in Palo Alto, California.

Komaza provides farmers with the support across the entire value chain, from supplying seedlings and other planting inputs to establish tree farms, up to harvesting, processing and selling mature trees to local markets.

Komaza's powerful approach combines technology, training, and service to create a new sustainable wood supply for Africa at an 80% cost disruption over traditional plantations. The has planted over 6 million trees with 25,000 smallholder farmers to date, with annual plantings nearly doubling Kenya’s rate of commercial tree planting.

 

Komaza is building a comprehensive suite of technologies and systems to support scaling of the entire value chain, from planting seedlings to running sawmills. The company has been recognized with numerous awards and investments, including Forbes, Ashoka, Mulago Foundation, and Novastar Ventures.

 

Komaza is backed by Novastar Ventures, AXA Impact Fun, Dutch development bank FMO, Mirova’s Land Degradation Neutrality Fund, Mulago Foundation, HOOGE Raedi Social Venture, Conservational International and others. The company raised $28M in Series B round on Jul 14, 2020. This brings Komaza's total funding to $37.9M to date.
