Hermeus

Hermeus is a startup designing a hypersonic passenger aircraft to connect the world faster.

Hermeus is building a Mach 5 aircraft that would be capable of making the trip from New York to London in just 90 minutes.

Hermeus was founded in 2018 by AJ Piplica, Glenn Case, Michael Smayda, and Skyler Shuford. The company is headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia.

Hermeus has successfully demonstrated a subscale engine prototype in early 2020, showing that the core design of its technology performed as intended. The company now plans to turn that into a version of the engine that matches its eventual production scale and power.

Hermeus is trying to develop a hypersonic plane that can fly at Mach 5 — more than twice the speed of the supersonic Concorde — to allow passengers to fly across the Atlantic Ocean in 90 minutes.

Hermeus has an 110,000 square-foot factory in Doraville, and over the last year it has been conducting engine tests and building a prototype of its first aircraft. In Nov 2020, Hermeus announced a $60M contract from the U.S. Air Force and a research and development agreement with NASA.

Hermeus is backed by Khosla Ventures, Canaan Partners, Sam Altman, Founders Fund, In-Q-Tel, Bling Capital, the Rise of the Rest Seed Fund, and others. The company raised $100M in new round on Mar 10, 2022. This brings Hermeus' total funding to $176M to date.
