Grammarly, formerly Sentenceworks, is a cross-platform cloud-based writing assistant that reviews spelling, grammar, punctuation, clarity, engagement, and delivery mistakes.

Grammarly’s product offers grammar checking, spell checking, and plagiarism detection services along with suggestions about writing clarity, concision, vocabulary, delivery style, and tone.

Grammarly was founded in 2009 in Ukraine by Alex Shevchenko, Max Lytvyn, and Dmytro Lider. The company is headquartered in San Francisco, with offices in Kiev, New York and Vancouver.


Grammarly works across more than 500,000 applications and websites including email clients, enterprise software and word processors. They consistently break new ground, by using a variety of innovative approaches — including advanced ML and deep learning, in NLP research to deliver unrivaled assistance. 


Grammarly is already scaling its product offerings and achieving its goal toward ubiquity with the launch of Grammarly for Mac and Windows. The new desktop application can be used on apps such as Microsoft Office, Slack, Discord, Jira and more.


Grammarly also recently announced the launch of Grammarly for Developers with the rollout of its Text Editor SDK (software development kit), which enables programmers to embed Grammarly text editing functionality into any web application.


Grammarly has delivered 1.2 trillion writing suggestions to their 30 million users. New and existing customers include Frost & Sullivan, HackerOne, Lucid, Zoom, Cisco, and Expedia. Grammarly also support over 6,800 nonprofits and nongovernmental organizations from over 150 countries with a free offering.


Grammarly is backed by General Catalyst, Baillie Gifford, IVP, BlackRock, SignalFire, Spark Capital, and others. The company raised $200M in a new round on Nov 17, 2021. This brings Grammarly's total funding to $400M to date. The latest round valued the company at $13B post-money. Grammarly was previously valued at over $1B when it raised $90M in Oct 2019.
