General Fusion

General Fusion is a clean energy technology company that is developing fusion energy: a clean, safe, abundant and on-demand approach to generating electricity.

General Fusion's goal to transform the world’s energy supply by developing the fastest, most practical, and cost-competitive path to commercial fusion power.

General Fusion was founded in 2002 by Michel Laberge. The company is headquartered in Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada, with locations in Washington D.C., and London, U.K.

General Fusion’s Magnetized Target Fusion system uses a sphere filled with molten lead-lithium that is pumped to form a vortex.  A pulse of magnetically-confined plasma fuel is then injected into the vortex.

General Fusion designs from the ground up to enable a practical, commercially-viable power plant. Electricity is generated from the fusion plant by pumping hot liquid metal through a heat exchanger to heat water, which then turns a steam turbine.

General Fusion is backed by Temasek, Bezos Expeditions, GIC, Canada’s Strategic Innovation Fund, Jameel Investment Management Company, Cleantech Practice BDC, Segra Capital, Thistledown Capital, the DLF Group, and others. The company raised $130M in Series E round on Nov 30, 2021. This brings General Fusion's total funding to $322.1M to date.
