BlueNalu is a leading cellular aquaculture company producing seafood directly from fish cells.
BlueNalu's mission is to be the global leader in cellular aquaculture, providing consumers with great tasting, healthy, safe, and trusted seafood products, that support the sustainability and diversity of our oceans.
BlueNalu was founded in 2017 by Lou Cooperhouse and Chris Dammann. The company is headquartered in San Diego, California.
BlueNalu's cell-cultured seafood provides a consistent, high-quality alternative to conventional seafood products that are inherently high in contaminants and that can be overfished, imported, or difficult to farm-raise.
BlueNalu's first product is a whole-muscle bluefin tuna, which is “available in very limited supply, can be extremely variable in its quality and sensory attributes, and has faced steep declines in fish stocks due to overfishing and illegal, unregulated and unreported fishing.
BlueNalu has developed hundreds of cell lines for eight different finfish species, with ongoing projects looking to expand into other premium seafood categories as well. The company has partnerships with seafood giants Pulmuone (South Korea), Mitsubishi (Japan) and Thai Union (Thailand).
BlueNalu is backed by Griffith Foods, Agronomics, Nutreco, KBW Ventures, Pulmuone, Rage Capital, Rich Product Ventures, AiiM Partners LP, Sumitomo Corporation of Americas, Losa Group, and others. The company raised $33.5M in a Series B round on Oct 09, 2023. This brings BlueNalu's total funding to $138M to date.
