Astroscale is an orbital debris removal company developing satellite end-of-life and active debris removal services to mitigate the growing and hazardous buildup of debris in space.
Astroscale is the first private company with a vision to secure the safe and sustainable development of space for the benefit of future generations, and the only company solely dedicated to on-orbit servicing across all orbits.
Astroscale was founded in 2013 by Nobu Okada. The company is headquartered in Sumida, Tokyo, Japan, with offices in Singapore, UK, Israel and Denver, Colorado.
Astroscale is developing solutions across the spectrum of on-orbit servicing missions, including Life Extension, In-situ Space Situational Awareness, End of Life services, and Active Debris Removal, to create sustainable space systems and mitigate the growing and hazardous buildup of debris in space.
Astroscale is also defining business cases and working with government and commercial stakeholders to develop norms, regulations, and incentives for the responsible use of space.
Astroscale has a contract with the Japanese space agency JAXA for the Active Debris Removal by Astroscale-Japan (ADRAS-J) mission. The company won a contract from the U.K. Space Agency in October to study deorbiting two defunct British satellites, including possibly a OneWeb satellite that failed last year.
Astroscale is backed by THE FUND Limited Partnership, aStart Co. Ltd., Hulic Co. Ltd., I-Net Corp., Shimizu Corp., Sparx Space Frontier Fund, Seraphim Space Investment Trust, and others. The company raised $109M in Series F round on Nov 25, 2021. This brings Astroscale's total funding to $300M to date.
