Astranis

Astranis is a satellite Internet startup that is building dedicated, low-cost communications satellites to connect the four billion people who lack reliable, affordable internet access.

Astranis' mission is to connect the world by reducing the cost of internet services in rural and remote areas with small, powerful satellites for geostationary orbit

Astranis was founded in 2015 by John Gedmark and Ryan McLinko. The company is headquartered in San Francisco, California.

Astranis makes small geostationary satellites aimed at users that want dedicated coverage over a specific region. Astranis’ small GEO satellites — ranging from 350 to 400 kilograms — can be repurposed relatively quickly from one region to another based on the customer needs.

Astranis owns and operates its satellites and offers them to customers as a turnkey solution, allowing them to provide bandwidth-as-a-service and unlock previously unreachable markets. This allows Astranis to launch small, dedicated satellites for small and medium-sized countries, Fortune 500 companies, existing satellite operators, and other customers.

Astranis has five satellites slated to launch in 2023. The first, Arcturus, is riding as a secondary payload on the Viasat-3 Falcon Heavy mission, which is tracking to launch in early- to mid-April. The other four birds will fly on a dedicated Falcon 9 mission this summer. Astranis has partnered with the U.S. Department of Defense, and companies from across the world.

Astranis is backed by BlackRock, Andreessen Horowitz, Baillie Gifford, Fidelity Management & Research Company LLC, Koch Strategic Platforms, Venrock, Monashee Investment Management, AME Cloud Ventures, Soma Capital, Harpoon, and others. The company raised $200M in a Series D round on Apr 14, 2023. This brings Astranis' total funding to $553.5M to date. The latest round pushed the company's valuation to $1.6B, up from previous $1.4M in Series C round raised in Apr 2021.
